Daily Read (4/14/16)

Quick takes from the world of adaptations.

New expanded Game of Thrones credits! The 360/VR version is nifty and also might make you seasick.

I am skeptical of both Benedict Cumberbatch hysteria AND the need for a new Grinch movie, but I actually think he’s an interesting choice to voice that character.

Speaking of movies we don’t need: another Peter Pan? Really???

The Fug Girls are now recapping Outlander!

Make sure you don’t miss Caroline Framke’s lovely piece on Bridget Jones.

Movie News: 1984, The Grinch, Talon, & More

  • Kristen Stewart and Nicholas Hoult are apparently making Equals, an “updated,” romantic version of 1984. So. That is a thing.
  • The new animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which I had managed to completely block out of my memory until I read this news, will be in theaters on November 17, 2017.
  • Universal has hired Jay Basu to adapt Julie Kagawa’s Talon.
  • In other Universal news, they’ve acquired Robert McCammon’s werewolf WWII novel The Wolf’s Hour.
  • And the Weinsteins are working on A Speck in the Sea, based on Paul Tough’s Times magazine cover story by the same name.

An Animated How the Grinch Stole Christmas Remake?

Is this necessary? According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has an animated remake of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas in the works. But . . . why? Audrey Geisel, Dr. Seuss’s widow, is executive producing, so I suppose that’s good, at least. Peter Candeland is directing. Producer Chris Melendandri has also produced the recent feature film versions of Horton Hears a Who and The Lorax, so that may bode well or ill, depending on your opinions of those offerings. I’ll admit upfront that I’m something of a Grinch purist – book or 1966 animated special only, thanks – so I’m skeptical.
