I had every intention of watching and reviewing Backstrom, but I’ll be honest with you: I couldn’t make it past the first ten minutes. And I was excited about this show at first – I love Nordic mysteries, and this adaptation is from Hart Hanson, the showrunner of Bones, which I’ve loved for years. I knew that the premise involved an unlikeable character, but that’s not necessarily a problem for me if the show has other things to recommend it.
But the first ten minutes of Backstrom involved so many racist, sexist, and homophobic lines that I couldn’t make myself keep watching. Many shows have offensive lines and plots and characters; whether this makes them not worth watching is always a complicated personal calculus. And to be fair, in Sarah’s review at Give Me My Remote, she says that the offensive elements are toned down in future episodes, and I’m happy to hear that. But I’m so sick of these kinds of “jokes,” and there are so many other things to read and watch, that I just can’t bring myself to reward this show by investing more time in it.
The first episode of Backstrom finally airs on Thursday on FOX, and we’ve got a few clips from the pilot! Is anyone excited about this one? I usually love mysteries in general and Nordic mysteries in particular, but I am just . . . not feeling this. At all. I get that the character is supposed to be unlikeable, and that’s fine, but if that’s the case the audience needs another reason to get invested, and I’m not seeing that so far. (And the various offensive jokes just in these few clips don’t help.) Maybe it will be better as a whole? Maybe?
Fox has released a promo for their upcoming detective show Backstrom, starring Rainn Wilson and based on the books by Leif Persson. I’ll admit that this – focusing on the main character’s unlikeability – didn’t make me particularly excited about the show, but I’ll give it a try. Backstrom premieres on Fox in 2015.
She’s getting her own show at midseason, but first, Agent Peggy Carter (played by Hayley Atwell) will appear on the season premiere of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which is set to air on September 23rd.
Fox has also released a trailer for Backstrom, their upcoming detective show from Bones‘s Hart Hanson and based on the books by Leif G.W. Persson (sadly not yet available in English). It stars Rainn Wilson, Genevieve Angelson, Kristoffer Polaha, Dennis Haysbert, Beatrice Rosen, Page Kennedy, and Thomas Dekker. You can see some pictures from the show at Give Me My Remote.
